Since march 2023, a CiYOU is used on the Ile Grande site, in Brittany, for the microalgae <\/b>culture<\/b>.<\/p>
Recently graduated of a Master’s degree in Marine biotechnologies, Mathilde used the CiYOU for 6 months during her internship<\/strong>.<\/p>

What’s your experience of running a culture & bioreactor ?<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u00ab Before using the CiYOU, I hadn’t used a lot <\/b>bioreactors<\/strong>. Only 1 practical on animal cells in engineering school. I’ve also used a 50L bag photobioreactor. \u00bb<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Who used the CiYOU the most ?<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u00ab It was me.<\/p>\n
I used it everyday<\/strong>. At the end of my interneship, I trained two technicians so that they could continue with the subjects. \u00bb<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What do you remember from the CiYOU ?<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u00ab The CiYOU is different from the other systems I’ve seen. During the 6 months of my internship, and after a few uses, it was easy to handle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
This is a very simple bioreactor<\/strong>. \u00bb<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

As Mathilde says, the CiYOU is easy to handle even if we have no experience in bioreactor running. That is to say that the equipment is perfectly adapted<\/strong> to students<\/strong> and new users<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

What do you think about the assembly and the cleaning of the bioreactors ?<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u00ab Although heavy when we bring the vessel to the autoclave, regarding ergonomy, it’s quite easy to move<\/strong>. Of course, we need a\u00a0 trolley <\/strong>and some help <\/strong>from a colleague, to bring vessels to the autoclave and to the cleaning zone.”<\/p>\n
\u00ab The cleaning <\/b>is simple <\/strong>too.<\/p>\n
After noticing the vessel height, we said “the cleaning is going to be complicated…”. Finally, as the vessels<\/b> are in 3 parts<\/strong>, it’s very simple<\/strong> to disassemble <\/b>and clean<\/strong>. \u00bb<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Have you encountered limits when using the CiYOU ?<\/strong><\/h5>\n
\u00ab You have to be careful with the glass, adopt handling habits to avoid banging and breaking it. \u00bb<\/p>\n
\u00ab During cultivation, we observed a lot of evaporation \u00bb.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00ab The interface is very well designed<\/strong>. Once you use it a little bit, and after navigating between pages, it’s easy to find your way around<\/strong>. This is very<\/strong> visual<\/strong>, both the interface<\/strong> and the vessels<\/strong>. It’s easy to see\u00a0 what’s going on in the culture<\/strong> through the glass, as the color, the Airlift movement… \u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
\u00abWhat I enjoyed the most was seeing microalgae in the vessels <\/strong>: look at the evolution <\/b>over time and the coloration<\/strong> depending on the culture. I had my own routine<\/strong> with the CiYOU : quantify the biomass by absorbance measure, microscopic observation\u2026”<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00ab I recommend the CiYOU for both <\/b>teaching <\/strong>and research<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
I think it’s easy to explain<\/strong> how it works, easy to handle. It’s a good <\/strong>experience<\/strong> for students<\/b>: they can manipulate <\/strong>it themselves <\/strong>and see visually <\/b>what’s going on in the vessel, follow and monitor the culture and conditions. This is so visual. \u00bb<\/p>\n
In research too, we can set up <\/b>a routine<\/strong>. Few steps take time, as calibration part. Then, once you get it, it’s easy to planify<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Again, it is easy to use and it’s a good tool<\/strong> for smale-scale trials.”<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
